Wario (ワリオ Wario) is the main protagonist of his own series and a recurring character in the Mario series. He is portrayed as an anti-hero and the anti-heroic and greedy version of his arch-rival Mario. He first debuted in the 1992 game Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins as the main antagonist and later the main protagonist of its sequel, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3.

Wario appears in almost every spin-off Mario game as a playable character, such as the Mario Kart series, Mario Party games, and sport games.

Creation and Development

The idea to introduce Wario as a new character originated during development of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. The staff team aimed for a "change of pace", and to not be bound by the ideas which were continuously used in Mario games leading up to that time; they desired to provide Mario with a new objective. Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins official Shogakukan game guide, staff interview on pages 106-111 (translation provided by "Shmuplations", accessed September 10, 2016) Rather than having Mario fight for the benefit of someone else (such as Princess Daisy in Super Mario Land 2's precursor, and Princess Peach throughout other games), the staff wanted Mario Bros to fight to win back something of his own. It was initially director Hiroji Kiyotake's idea to introduce Wario as a new character that fits this change in objective, although several rejected characters were presented earlier which no one took a liking to. Before any actual character development, Wario's name was the first thing that was decided on, being derived from the Japanese word "warui" (悪い), meaning "bad". Wario's physical design and personality was based on the idea that a protagonist should have an arch-rival and nemesis. Kiyotake stated that Wario's relationship to Mario was inspired by the American comic book characters Popeye and Bluto. Bluto is physically well-built, motivated by self-interests, and more cunning than his counterpart, Popeye.

Kiyotake subsequently discussed his idea with his assistant character designer and co-director Takehiko Hosokawa, with whom Kiyotake normally sought approval from before presenting an idea to the rest of the game's staff. To Kiyotake's surprise, the idea to flip the "M" seen on Mario's Cap to create a "W" received extremely enthusiastic support by the rest of the staff. Wario went on to become the game's main antagonist by taking over Mario's castle, which met the staff team's initial vision of diverting from the conventional objectives established by previous Mario games.

Background

Wario's first chronological appearance was in Yoshi's Island DS. He along with numerous other infants had been abducted by the evil Kamek's Toadie army in order to find the legendary Star Children that were spoken of in legend to be the only thing standing in the way of the Koopa Troop's attempt at world domination. But Baby Wario did not remain with the Toadies for long, due to his terrible tantrums, so when the Toadies finally became fed up with the baby they abandoned him in an undersea cave in World 3–5.

Not long after a Yoshi, which had been separated from the Stork and the other babies, ended up finding the lost Baby Wario and together they managed to escape the enemy filled area and they continued to aid each other throughout the rest of World 3. After going through five levels, Wario saw a line of Bandits, each carrying a coin. As he was a very greedy baby, Wario jumped on the only Bandit with no coin, in the back of the line, hoping to snag some riches.

Baby Wario along with the rest of the Yoshi’s worked together to defeat Bowser at the end of the game. At the end of the game Wario got Bowser's treasure, but Baby Bowser plopped in, and again, they started to argue. It is unknown if Wario ever returned to his parents or not.

In the Super Mario series

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

Wario's first overall appearance is in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, which released in 1992 for the Game Boy. Wario is the main antagonist and final boss of the game — driven by long-lasting envy, he takes over Mario Land and his castle while the plumber is battling his way through Sarasaland to rescue Princess Daisy from the alien overlord Tatanga. Using a rarely-seen arcane ability, Wario hypnotizes most of Mario Land's inhabitants and forces them on the same line, commanding them to stop Mario's attempts at retaking his castle and the surrounding land. Lastly, in order to ensure that Mario can't enter his castle, Wario scatters its keys — the eponymous six Golden Coins — across Mario Land. He finishes his plan by rechristening the castle as the Wario Castle.

The final battle with Wario comprises three phase. In the first phase, Wario dashes across the room and stomps upon the floor, which causes the crystal balls moving across the ceiling above to fall down. During the second phase, Wario uses a Carrot and transforms into Bunny Wario. In this form, Wario jumps up and flutters across the screen before finally slamming down onto the ground, again causing lights to fall from above. Finally, in the last phase of the battle, Wario uses a Fire Flower and turns into Fire Wario. Now, Wario leaps across the screen and shoots fireballs after he lands.

When Wario is defeated, he shrinks down to become Small Wario punts a shoe at Mario before running off the castle's balcony, crying. With Wario gone, the spell is lifted, and Mario's castle returns to normal.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3

After being defeated in the previous game, Wario resolves to get a castle of his own even bigger and better than Mario's. To this end, he makes his way to Kitchen Island in order to steal the coins and treasures collected by the Brown Sugar Pirates, with his ultimate goal being a large gold statue of Princess Peach which he plans to sell back to Mario for a fortune. Wario manages to defeat the pirates and their leader, Captain Syrup, along with her summoned genie. However, Mario takes the golden statue before Wario can claim it.

Left with only the genie, Wario summons it and wishes for a castle. The genie grants his wish, but takes all the coins and treasures Wario collected during his adventure to do so. Depending on how many coins Wario ends up with, he can end up with anything from a tiny birdhouse to his own planet.

Virtual Boy Wario Land

While vacationing in the Awazon River Basin, Wario is rudely awakened by an animal spraying water on his face. He stands up in a fury, but catches sight of some strange masked creatures entering a waterfall carrying treasure. His interest piqued, Wario follows them behind the waterfall and finds a massive vault full of treasure. Quickly overwhelming the creatures, Wario prepares to grab the loot. However, an earthquake occurs, scattering the treasures and dumping Wario deep into the earth. Wario begins to work his way back, collecting coins and finding the treasures as he goes. After defeating the final boss, he finds himself back in front of the vault.

If Wario did not collect all the treasures, the vault does not open and Wario leaves with the coins he collected, however, the animals from before have disassembled his plane, leaving him stranded. He furiously grabs one of the animals, who tells him about another way to leave, which Wario accepts and goes off, leaving the coins behind. How Wario ends up actually leaving is determined on how many coins he collected.

If Wario did collect all the treasures, the vault opens and Wario claims all the treasure inside, which includes a massive amount of coins, a magic carpet, and what is presumably a genie.

Super Mario 64 DS

Wario is an unlockable playable character and one of the main protagonists in Super Mario 64 DS. This is his only playable appearance in the Super Mario series as of currently. He and Luigi come to "crash the party" after Mario is invited to see Princess Peach; Wario's motive is heavily hinted to be robbing Peach's treasure, noted by both the Toads and the SM64DS website.

Mario, Luigi and Wario are captured by Bowser's minions immediately after entering Peach's Castle, and promptlu locked behind doors that can only be opened with special keys. Wario is the final character to be unlocked, with his portrait stowed in the mirror room on the second floor of the castle. It is located in the other side of the mirror; in order to get there, the player must use Luigi's invisibility power. Once there, Luigi must get through a small icy stage and battle Chief Chilly in order to obtain the key to Wario's door.

Wario is the strongest of the four characters, but he is also the slowest at both running and swimming and has the lowest jump. He can smash Black Bricks, pick up and throw signs, he moves faster when carrying things he picks up (Which he carries on his back) and his attacks cause more damage to enemies. Wario's Power Flower ability is Metal Wario, which replaces Metal Mario from the original game. In the VS. Mode, Wario's attacks stun opponents, enabling Wario to lift his victims, spin, and throw them.

Wario also makes an appearances in two of his minigames: Coincentration and Intense Coincentration.

In the WarioWare series

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!

While Wario is watching TV in his house in Diamond City, he sees a news report of a hot new game called Pyoro that is breaking sales records and making a fortune. This inspires Wario to create his own game company so that he can cash in on videogames as well. He goes to the store and buys a laptop, and turns his house in Diamond City into the WarioWare company. As he quickly discovered, however, video game making is a long, tedious process. He finally hits on the idea of hiring his friends in Diamond City to help him make Microgames to turn into one big game.

In the end, Wario's game is a success, making him lots of money. When his friends demand payment for their help with the game, Wario tries to escape with the money in a rocket ship. However, he has a midair collision with Dr. Crygor and all the money is lost in the ocean.

Wario serves as the host of two sections in the game: Intro Games and Anything Goes.

WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$!

Wario reprises his role as the host of Intro Games and Anything Goes, as well as the host of the Multiplayer Game "Outta My Way."

WarioWare: Twisted!

When Wario loses the game he's playing on his Game Boy Advance, he angrily throws it, causing it to get broken. He takes the broken GBA to Dr. Crygor to fix it. Crygor throws the GBA into his latest invention, the Gravitator, which pops out multiple GBAs with no buttons. Wario tries one and is confused, but Crygor explains you have to tilt it to play it. Wario finds it fun, as do Mona and 9-Volt. Wario realizes that he can turn this device into cash.

Sure enough, WarioWare: Twisted! becomes another big hit for WarioWare Inc. While Dr. Crygor is churning out more of the tiltable GBAs, Wario, who is sitting on the conveyor belt playing one, falls into the Gravitator himself and is transformed into Wario-Man. Wario decided to use his new superpowers to save the world of all its money. Dr. Crygor tries to toss Wario-Man away, but he lands in the Gravitator and begins to "level up." Rockets form on the Gravitator and launch itself and Wario-Man into space, where it transforms into a massive robot.

Nearby, Orbulon flies into space on his backup spaceship, with Mona, 9-Volt, 18-Volt, and Kat & Ana aboard. Wario-Man sees them and waves, but the ship detects the foreign robot and attacks, blasting it to pieces and sending Wario-Man falling back to earth and into the ocean. As he lands in the water, Wario vows to fire everyone. A short time later, the GbA from the beginning falls into the ocean as well, and Wario comes up with it.

Wario serves as the host of three game sets: The Smorgasbord Sampler, Speed Spin, and Spandex Challenge (as Wario-Man).

WarioWare: Touched!

One day, Wario is walking through Diamond City, having just stolen a GBA and a GBA: SP. He trips over a rock and drops them both down a sewer. The Sewer Guru pops up and asks him if he dropped the two GBAs, or a Nintendo DS. Wario, in typical greedy fashion, says "Gimme all of them!" and tackles the Sewer Guru, coming up with the DS. At first, he can't figure out how to play it because of its two screens. He tries tilting the machine to no avail, then gets angry and shakes it, causing a stylus to fly out. Wario eventually puts together that you use the stylus to touch the screen to play the game. Wario once again hits on a money making idea: With two screens, he'll make double the money!

In his microgame set, Touch Training, Wario is sitting in his house eating chocolate. Suddenly, he gets a toothache, flies out through his roof and lands in his garage. He quickly hops on his motorcycle and drives to Dr. Payne's dental clinic. Dr. Payne fixes up his teeth, but warns Wario to stay away from sweets. Feeling much better, Wario takes his motorcycle for a ride. A short time later, he smells sugar in the air, and sees The Sweet Spot. He stops there and orders ten pies. Before he bites into one, he recalls Dr. Payne's warning to stay away from the sweets. However, he brushes it off and bites into one of the pies. He ends up getting another toothache and flying through the air once again, this time crashing back into Dr. Payne's Dental Clinic. Dr. Payne, completely unsurprised, says "I knew you'd be back!"

In his second microgame set, Super Zero, Wario is laid up in bed, sick with a 104 degree fever. Realizing that garlic would make him feel better, he goes to his fridge to find some, but only finds some "funky looking garlic" (actually a mandrake), which he eats. The mandrake somehow transforms him into Wario-Man, and he sets out to show off his power by flying through the air (actually dragging himself along the ground) and squatting a large rock. He then sees a train coming and thinks he can crush it, but his attempt fails and the train sends him flying. Just as the news declared that WarioWare: Touched! is another smash hit for Wario, Wario-Man crashes into the sewer from the opening, then pops out in his normal form. The Sewer Guru emerges, angry that Wario just landed on him, and smacks him with his staff.

WarioWare: Smooth Moves

In Wario's Chapter, "Mysterious Form Baton Found!," Wario is sitting in his house eating snacks, when a mysterious creature called a Splunk shows up and steals them. Wario catches sight of the thief and chases him to the Temple of Form, where he finds a treasure called the Form Baton. He takes it, but this triggers a boulder trap that forces Wario to flee. Fortunately, Wario escapes, and gloats over the new treasure he found.

Later, in "Forever Form Baton," Wario receives a present from Penny Crygor in the form of a miniature motorcycle. Wario takes it for a ride, but the bike sucks him in and spits him out as multiple Tiny Warios. The Tiny Warios raid a strawberry patch, then after eating their fill, recombine into the original Wario. Wario suddenly realizes he's surrounded by Splunks, who demand he return the Form Baton he stole. The Splunks chase Wario through Diamond City and back to the Temple of Form. Inside the Temple, Wario trips and drops the Form Baton, which returns to its proper place. The Splunks thank Wario for returning the treasure.

WarioWare: D.I.Y.

When Wario's TV is broken, he takes it to Dr. Crygor to get it fixed. Seeing some strange devices that resemble TVs, Wario offers to trade his for one of them. Dr. Crygor explains that they are not TVs, but devices called the "Super MakerMatic 21", which can be used to create games, music, and comics. Wario sees this as a new ticket to riches, especially since WarioWare Inc. had split up into Diamond Software and Wario-Man Software. He works together with Penny Crygor to teach a fresh game designer how to make their own games, so he can take their hard work and sell them for his own profit.

Wario does not have his own Microgame set in this game. Instead, he "assists" Penny and the player during the Tutorials, and also offers contract work to create artwork for incomplete Microgames at the WarioWare building.

WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase

Wario appears as Wario-Man in his Microgame set, "The Extraordinary Wario-Man," in this game. While he's "flying" around, he spots a disaster: There's a long line of people trying to get into the bathrooms at the park, but the door handles are broken! Wario-Man quickly leaps into action to get the doors open. When the player succeeds at a microgame, Wario-Man gets the door open and the grateful person waiting runs into the bathroom. If the player fails, the waiting person collapses and Wario-Man loses one of the flowers that represents his lives. After passing the Boss Stage, Wario-Man briefly poses next to a billboard advertising "Wario-Man, The Movie."

Game & Wario

Wario is sitting around watching TV in his house. As he flips through channels, he finds a news story about a new way to play games, using a TV and a Controller that has its own screen. Wario catches the scent of another way he could make millions, and immediately gets to work making games for the new system.

In typical Wario fashion, however, he soon gets bored and the laptop he was working on is left to collect dust. While watching TV and eating strawberries, a mouse steals his last strawberry. Wario sees it and chases it outside, crashing through a passing archer and stealing his bow and arrows. Wario shoots arrows at the mouse and eventually nails the stolen strawberry. The mouse later gets revenge by shaking pepper onto Wario while he's sleeping, but the ensuing sneeze causes the mouse to crash into the laptop and knock the dust of it. Wario is inspired and gets back to work, eventually creating the game Arrow.

Later, Wario is bored again, and decides to go for a ride on his motorcycle. As he passes a clothing store, he sees a pirate outfit for sale. He immediately buys it and puts it on, becoming Captain Wario. This inspires him to create the game Pirates. When he later shows up outside of Toy Express in his pirate costume, the fans of the game confuse him for the Captain Wario that is the final boss of the game and end up using their "magical shields" to create an energy ball that sends Wario flying. He ends up crashing into Club Sugar, where the rest of his friends are having a party and playing all the games they designed. Jimmy T says, "Crashin' the party? That's our Wario."

WarioWare Gold

Wario makes his way to Luxeville, where he steals a gold pot. Later, while he's back at home playing video games, he realizes he's hungry, but he has no money for pizza. While trying to come up with a way to make some cash fast, he sees a news report about the release of Super Pyoro and hits upon an inspiration. He immediately informs Diamond City that he's holding the biggest video game tournament ever: The Wario Bowl Games, with the winner getting 10 million coins. He then calls his friends and convinces them to make games for the tournament.

However, his theft of the Golden Pot hasn't gone unnoticed, as Lulu comes to Diamond City to get it back. After the Wario Bowl Games has begun, Wario hosts the warm-ups for the Mash League, the Twist League, and the Touch League. In the first intermission, Wario is literally being showered with coins while laughing about the tournament being a success so far. He then smells the Golden Pot with a rancid odor, thinking that it is a smell of victory. In the next intermission, Wario is snoring, until he wakes up and thinks that half the players gave up. But it turns out that the players cleared 8 whole levels, infuriating Wario as he goes back to sleep, in his rage nap. After all the Leagues are beaten by the players, Wario is preparing to bungee jump as he announces one last league of the tournament: The Ultra League, right before he gets a wedgie.

Wario then prepares himself for the final battle against the players who are waiting to collect the reward. However, the prize was already claimed by Wario, and then he puts on the Golden Pot on his head, transforming himself into Wario Deluxe and battles the players with his own microgames. In the middle of the fight, Wario Deluxe starts cheating by using his powers to sabotage the players. However, Lulu comes back to help the players and shoots the arrows at the balloons, distracting Wario Deluxe as she tries to get the Golden Pot back from him. After the players won the tournament, Wario Deluxe ask Lulu who she is, but he doesn't see how she is Luxville's greatest hero. He then refuses to give up the Golden Pot, until he was sprayed by Lulu's Hydrocannon LX, removing the Golden Pot from him and turning back to normal Wario. At first, he doesn't understand what she meant by "holding in". But then, she told him that the "Golden Pot" he stole is actually a potty, which it has just been cleaned after it was used. Wario then laughs hysterically and tells her to go away and potty in peace.

Before he ends the game, the entire WarioWare crew showed up and they are all waiting for their payment. Wario refuses to pay them, of course, as he tries to run away with all the coins in the briefcase, until he trips and Young Cricket grabs a hold of him, as the rest of the crew open the briefcase to collect what's left of the coins, which turns out that he spent all the rest of the coins on the balloons. Wario then demands his crew to give those coins back, but then they ignored him and then he cries out.

WarioWare: Get It Together!

Personality

Wario typically has a natural greed for money, which also balances it out for his competitive side when it comes to having a competition with Mario, Wario also has quite the temper, when he usually gets Into a typical rival competition, or if he loses or tries to best Mario.

Wario (WarioWare D.I.Y

Wario, as he appears in WarioWare: D.I.Y..

In Wario games, he is generally lazy, ruthless, and greedy. He is foul and smelly, as he eats a lot of garlic, his favorite food. When there is an opportunity to obtain treasure, or vast amount of fortune, he usually is determined to get it. Despite all of this, Wario plays the role of an anti-hero, or neutral character, with the exception of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, in which he fights along side Bowser and Ganondorf, only to aid the player later on. He has been cast as a hero when fighting others who are more villainous, which have made his personal and moral flaws seem smaller. He is only interested in saving the day when it means fortune for him or a way home.

His fierce competitiveness is fueled by the jealousy towards Mario. In later years after their initial encounter the tension between has weakened, but it still remains. Wario has allied with Mario to defeat greater threats in Super Mario 64 DS. According to the comic Super Mario Adventures, Wario has hated Mario since they were both young, Mario bullied Wario with dirty pranks, such as making Wario pick up Piranha plants while, on his side, picking up turnips. According to Nintendo Mario and Wario have known each other before Wario stole his castle, though if the comic is correct or not is still open for debate. At times, Wario may resort to criminal violence to have his vengeance; Such as bombing Peach Dome, unleashing chaos and destruction. Sometimes, Wario gains a begrudging respect to Mario and his desire to beat him rather than kill him. However in Mario Super Sluggers, he and Waluigi actually do. He appears to have a crush on Peach and declares to win her heart and wishes that she will be like him, much to Mario's annoyance.

Judging from his bad intentions, Wario has been consistently characterized as extremely arrogant, vengeful, and at times, sadistic. Many of Wario's heroic acts are because of self-interest or greed, although he later settles down and mellows out. Wario is more of a tactical fighter who often rushes in the brawl without hesitation. However, his rage or arrogance often causes him to underestimate his opponent and usually leads to his eventual defeat.

Wario has also been shown to be one of the more intelligent characters of the Mario and Wario series, as well as one of the most serious, rarely exhibiting humor. When he does so, his humor is often very dry and far darker than others characters, for this is due to his taste for crude humour. Aside from his more bleak sense of humor, he has also at times engaged in more sarcastic humor when gloating.

Despite his personality flaws, Wario is capable of respecting individuals, although he never outright states it often showing his respect non verbally.

Because of his arrogance, attitude and wrongdoing, Wario gains much disdain from those around him, particularly Mario, Toad, and Peach, who continually admonished him for his brutality.

Arguably, his most defining trait is his rivalry with Mario and his obsession to surpass him. He until goes so far as to break down in tears over his inability to surpass Mario. Indeed, it would seem that Wario's most unique relationship is with Mario.

Friends

Wario has almost never been seen with friends in the Marioverse, only seen with Waluigi (Luigi’s doppelganger) and, in Mario Superstar Baseball, Boo. But in the WarioWare series, Wario is seen with quite a lot of friends all of which work for him at his video game company, such as Jimmy T., Mona and Dr. Crygor to name a few of the extensive part. Mario Party 6 also implies that Wario is secretly friends with Toadette.

Physical Appearance

WarioArtwork2

Wario in his Classic Plumber outfit.

Wario(WWSM)1

Wario in his WarioWare outfit.

Wario is shorter, fatter, and yet, stronger than Mario. He has a large jagged mustache, a bellicose cackle, and has a stronger Italian accent than Mario. While Wario is bigger, a lot of it is often implied to be fat.

Wario wears 2 outfits:

  • His first (and original) outfit in the Mario series and the Wario Land series is a plumbers outfit similar to Mario, Luigi and Waluigi's, but with a yellow undershirt with the sleeves cut to the elbow (which was not shown in the Mario spin-off games until the GameCube) and purple overalls with silver buttons. However, in his early appearances, including his debut in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins and until Wario Land II, he originally wore a yellow long-sleeved undershirt and fuchsia overalls. He wears green elf-like shoes, a yellow hat with a white brim (with the W symbol, Mario's symbol flipped upside down, on top which unlike Mario, Luigi and Waluigi comes out of the half-circle) and white gloves with the W symbol on them.
  • With his second outfit, Wario wears in the WarioWare series and Super Smash Bros. Brawl and it's two sequels, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS/Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (although you may choose). He wears pink pants suspended with a belt, a dark blue shirt, a light blue ripped jacket (saying 'Hurry Up!' if looked at him in Smash Bros games) yellow fingerless gloves with the W symbol, a yellow helmet (with the W symbol) with goggles, and purplish-blue elf-like shoes.

Other Info

Vehicles

Wario, so far has three known vehicles, The Wario Car: a purple car that resembles a Cadillac, The Wario Bike: a yellow motorbike that resembles a Harley Davidson, and a large yellow truck we can deduce is primarily used to haul treasure (Seen only at the ending of Wario Land 4). The Wario Car received a different paint job in Mario Kart DS called Brute, it has been Wario’s primary vehicle in the Mario Kart series since Mario Kart: Double Dash. The Wario Bike was introduced in the WarioWare series. The bike is Wario’s primary transport in WarioWare: Touched. Along with the WarioWare appearances, the bike also appears in SSBB, SSB4 and Mario Kart Wii (although when other characters use the bike it gets a different paint job). The Wario Bike is yellow and has flames on the side only in SSBB. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Wario had a hover car with a W and his moustache design on it. This was the car he kept those who he turned into trophies when he was taking them to Subspace during the Supspace Emissary. This car was taken by King Dedede and was never seen again.

Abilities

Just like Mario, Wario has his own special abilities.

  • Dash Attack – This is Wario's signature move in his platforming appearances. Wario does a shoulder barge while running, upon contact, most enemies die, however, enemies with weapons in front of them, or larger enemies don’t go down as easily, this attack can also be used to break blocks. This has been first seen in Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 and has since been used in many other Wario Land titles.
  • Ground Pound – Wario jumps up into the air and lands heavily on his buttocks, causing enemies, or certain objects to die/break, it can also be used in some games to stun all enemies on screen.
  • Super Dash Attack – Wario charges with his head out in front of him, causing enemies and certain objects to die/break, without Wario stopping.

Smash Bros. Series

  • Wario Waft – When the move hasn’t been held in, Wario does a small fart. When the move has been held in for a lengthy time, Wario unleashes a huge fart which launches him into the air. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as the attack is charging, his belly noticeably bulges the longer it's held in. This was removed in the next Smash Bros. game.
  • One of Wario's custom alternatives for the Wario Waft is the Rose Waft. This releases pink gas that puts life-sapping flowers on the victims' heads.
  • Chomp – Wario opens his mouth wide enough to bite an opponent. This move will inflict a large amount of damage, because of his garlic eating habits. He is also able to consume items and obstacles on the stage. Depending on the item, he will either heal or take damage from what he eats. Customizations allow Wario to use a Vacuum Breath or breathe fumes.
  • Corkscrew – Wario jumps and spins rapidly. The rapid spinning is the cause of most of the damage.
  • Jumping Ability – Despite his fat stature, Wario is shown to jump incredible heights just like his presumed cousins (Mario and Luigi), an example of this is in Super Smash Bros Brawl. On one of the cutscenes Wario kidnapped Princess Peach or Zelda, then jumped to Meta Knight's Halberd (which was in the sky) with one leap. His jumping ability might rival Mario's.
  • Wario Bike – Wario pulls out his bike from WarioWare and drives it around. It can be used for recovery as well as spacing Wario from his foes.

Master of Disguise

These are Wario's Disguises.

  • Thief Wario – Wario can run and jump higher. Also has the shoulder barge attack, this is the standard Wario
  • Cosmic Wario – Wario is equipped with a space suit and a laser gun, by touching the screen Wario fires in that direction.
  • Arty Wario – Wario dresses up like an artist and can draw objects, if the player draws a square Wario will create a block where the player drew the square was. He can also draw a door which will take him to the beginning of the level, and, once his Arty Wario disguise is upgraded, he can draw hearts that refill his energy meter. If the players draws anything else a living poo will fall and run off screen. Wario cannot move in this state.
  • Genius Wario – Can see things invisible to the naked eye, wields a bunching glove box for defence against enemies.
  • Sparky Wario – Wario can create electricity and light up dark places. Can shoot electricity after certain events. This is activated by clicking the screen and Wario cannot move while sending out electricity.
  • Captain Wario – Wario is allowed to swim in water (underneath the surface). Wario turns into a submarine which can shoot torpedoes after certain events.
  • Dragon Wario – Wario turns into a dragon, which can breath fire.
  • Wicked Wario – Wario can fly with this ability (by blowing into the DS mic).

Others

  • Fat Wario – Wario eats a food item thrown at him by a certain enemy, he becomes even fatter, slowing him down, but giving him the power to kill enemies by just walking into them, and breaking strong objects.
  • Puffy Wario – Wario gets stung by a bee, which causes his face to swell up like a balloon and allow him float around the level (similar to Balloon Mario from Super Mario World).
  • Flat Wario – Wario becomes smashed, allowing him to go through tight spaces and lightly float down to lower parts of the level.
  • Bouncy Wario – Wario becomes a spring, allowing him to jump very high.
  • Zombie Wario – When Wario gets hit by sludge or an un-dead enemy, he becomes a zombie. He is invincible to enemies and can fall through one-way floors.
  • Snowman Wario – Wario becomes a giant snowball. He is unable to climb up floors easily and can roll very quickly down slopes.
  • Bubble Wario – When underwater, when Wario touches a bubble, he becomes trapped in it and floats to the surface.
  • Flaming Wario – When touched by fire, Wario catches on fire and runs around the course (similar to Mario running around with his overalls on fire from Super Mario 64) until being literally burned to ashes and then he goes back to normal.
  • Frozen Wario – When Wario becomes frozen, he slides backwards until he hits a wall.
  • Wario Man – When Wario eats bad garlic, he turns into Wario-Man. Wario-man’s moves are powered up versions of Wario’s normal moves. In WarioWare: Twisted!, Wario-Man can fly and has super strength although in WarioWare Touched!, he tries to stop a train and gets smacked out of the way. This is probably because of a sickness he tried to cure earlier in the game. In the Super Smash Bros. series, this becomes his Final Smash. In Brawl & Smash 4, this attack is a controllable transformation where Wario's speed and damage are heavily amplified, he is nigh-invincible and his Corkscrew electrocutes enemies. After a while, this wears off. In Ultimate, like all other transformation smashes, Wario-Man is no longer controllable and performs automated attacks.

Solid Snake Codec Conversation

The following is the conversation of Snake and the Colonel talking about Wario in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Snake: This guy kind of gives me the creeps.

Colonel: That's Wario, Snake.

Colonel: Wario first appeared as Mario's rival, but he really made his name in the WarioWare games.

Colonel: Watch out for Wario's bite. It's not just damage you take from it.

Snake: What do you mean, Colonel?

Colonel: Wario loves garlic. He eats whole cloves of it day and night.

Colonel: So try not to get caught in his mouth. Once that smell gets on you, it'll stick to you for quite a while.

Snake: ...That's a scary thought.

Colonel: He also attacks by farting. He can fart to fly around, too.

Snake: By farting?! Are you kidding me?!

Colonel: Sadly, no. I am not kidding. If his belly starts to bulge, watch out.
