Super Mario 64 DS is a Mario series video game that is also known as the remake of Super Mario 64. It was released for Nintendo DS in 2004 for North America and Japan, and 2005 for Europe. It was the first 3D Mario platformer for handheld released.
In Super Mario 64 DS, Wario makes an appearance as the third unlockable character. He can be unlocked by first getting the second key to unlock the upstairs floor. Taking Luigi into the room with the entrance to Snowman's Land, and using a Power Flower allows Luigi to jump through the mirror. On the other side of the mirror is an entrance into Chief Chilly Challenge. Beating Chief Chilly will unlock Wario's door allowing you to play as Wario. Wario is an optional character to unlock, but is required to get certain power stars in the various worlds since he is the only one strong enough to break black brick blocks.

Around 2007, rumors began to spread in Super Mario 64 DS that Waluigi is an unlockable character in the game, similar to the Luigi myth in its predecessor Super Mario 64.
